American Idol results: And then there were … still 7

Bunny: These opening theatrics are getting string-cheesier by the week. The group number is set to “Freeze Frame” (J. Geils Band), wherein Matt Giraud checks out a magazine stand with the other singing and dancing Idols on the covers.

Then we move right into another '80s movie hit, “Maniac” by Michael Sembello from “Flashdance.” For the second week in a row, they're actually singing live. So live, in fact, that Anoop almost falls down the stairs. Steady, there.

Adam tells us how Quentin Tarantino's movie making methods related to his ability to mentor. Allison talks about going to the premiere of “17 Again” and we see a clip of that experience. Zac Efron is in the audience tonight.

Season 8 Top 7

Building the bottom 3: Allison Iraheta is first to find out if she will be participating in that endeavor. Fortunately for her, she is safe. Adam Lambert is too. Anoop Desai wants to know if he's in the bottom three for the third time in a row. He is, poor guy. He will sit there alone for a while, because it's time for...

Jennifer Hudson! The Oscar- and Grammy-winning Idol alum from Season 3 sings “If This Isn't Love” from her CD. She seems to be having trouble with her ear monitor or whatever they call it. I'm not sure if that explains why she seems a little distracted and not really into it. But she sounds great, looks great, and deserves more than the rather tepid applause she gets afterwards.

Ryan talks to a sad and lonely Anoop for a minute; the dawg is surprised to be sitting there again. Simon is not. Kris Allen and Lil Rounds are up next. Simon didn't get to critique Kris last night so he chips in now, using the word “brilliant.” He's safe. Lil gets another chance to defend herself, which is not exactly endearing, and then is sent to the stools.

Then it's time for Matt Giraud and Danny Gokey. They, too, get to defend their choices. Randy sends some “you didja thing, dawg” drivel in Danny's general direction. Matt is the third one in the bottom 3. Kara says America got it right. Paula dances around the question. I'm with Kara.

But someone is headed back to safety right now. It is Anoop. He doesn't seem too excited because he knows he's only going to be back on a stool in 7 days anyway.

Time for Miley Cyrus and “The Climb.” I can honestly say I've never heard her sing a complete song, being that I'm not prepubescent and everything. Her voice isn't bad, but I don't think it would have won Idol for her had she been a contestant. And despite the head-tossing and spastic arm movements, she's phoning it in; there's a disturbing vacant look in her eyes. I wonder how she'll be handling all the fame and pressure by the time she's 20. With aplomb, I hope.

So, will they use “the save” tonight? Simon says he'd consider it for one of them.

Lil squeaks through again, so Matt will have to sing. He has the do-over he was wishing for earlier. Let's see how he does with that knowledge and without his piano. After some “deliberations,” Kara and Paula are acting like 13-year-olds at a Jonas Brothers concert. In my opinion, Matt hasn't done enough, and he is still doing more runs than necessary.

The theater has taken on the atmosphere of a high school basketball game, with everyone shouting “SAVE! SAVE! SAVE!” We can tell by the body language at the judges' table that Matt is actually going to get the much-bandied-about Judges' Save, and yes, that is what happens. Apparently, they figure their last chance to use it will be with Lil next week, and she is no longer their darling, so they need to spend it now if they're going to. Thank goodness we don't have to hear about it anymore! At least not in the context of wondering if and when they will put it to use.

So two people will leave next week, and it will likely be Matt and Lil, but it could be Anoop. Depending on how well (or badly) disco week goes, Allison or Kris could also conceivably be in trouble.

We will dispense with the scoring this week, since nobody was right, and next week we'll score for both the 6th- and 7th-place finishers. Sadly for the Prognosticats, if Matt hadn't been saved, they'd have gained a point on the humans.

Join us for the challenging disco week next Tuesday!

They wasted the judges’ save on mole-face?
