Aired 2/18/09
It's the first group performance of Season 8, and they're doing one of my current favorite songs, “I'm Yours.” They actually sound pretty good together! I'm really impressed. I think that was one of the best group numbers from any season. Who'da thunk it?
After a recap and some chatter with the nervous contestants, Ryan calls Casey Carlson center stage. No surprise—she is not in the top 12.
What about Stephen Fowler? Kara doesn't think he did enough to stick around. She's right. He is philosophical about it.
Alexis Grace is called next. Ryan wants to know if she needs to throw up. Paula says she was marvelous last night. She has made it! Good for her. She sings again and shows why she got so many votes.
Ricky Braddy and Jackie Tohn are up together after the break. The news for Ricky is not good. He's out. It's the same for Jackie. Simon's assessment of her performance was correct.
Now Anoop Desai and Michael Sarver come to the center. Ryan delivers the surprising news that Michael is in. I like Michael's self-effacing attitude, and even though I'm not a big fan, I'm happy for him. However—Anoop! :sob: Anoop, we hardly knew ya. Let's hope a wildcard pick comes your way. Michael sings his song again as well.
We are treated to about 20 seconds of a duet between David Cook and Carrie Underwood taped at Disney World, where all 7 previous American Idols gathered for the opening of the American Idol Experience at Disney.
Michael Johns and Carly Smithson from Season 7 appear to sing “The Letter.” It's always nice to see past performers. They sound pretty good.
Ann Marie Boskovich, Brent Keith, and Stevie Wright all stand up to hear recaps of their performances and get the news. None of them have made it. Who's the guy on the sidelines who looks like he's about to inflict grievous bodily injury on someone?
So now Danny Gokey and Tatiana Del Toro are last to find out. Oh, boy. This is going to be one of those nasty surprises, isn't it? Tatiana can't even speak because she's on the hairy edge of hysteria as usual. We'll probably get a meltdown whether she makes it or not.
After the break, it is revealed that ... Danny is in. Whew. They had me scared for a minute or two there. TDT looks like she's about to slip into unconsciousness, and then the crocodile tears begin as Danny sings us out.
So Danny Gokey, Alexis Grace, and Michael Sarver are the first 3 to make it into the top 12.
